Simple Rating System ...

I'm serving on an Ad Hoc Rating Improvement Committee. I remember a thread from a few years back from a Forum member that had a very simple system, something like, "Capable of officiating a varsity league, conference, or state playoff game", "Capable of officiating a regular season varsity game", Capable of officiating a high level junior varsity game", Capable of officiating a low level junior varsity game", and "Capable of officiating a freshman, or middle school game".

I'm having trouble searching for this thread. Does anybody use a simple system like this, and if so, exactly how are the various levels worded? Many on our board would like to move away from using terms like excellent, good, average, fair and poor. Thanks.

Here is our rating categories. Obviously "1" being the highest.

1 -- This official is qualified to work state championship games.
2 -- This official is qualified to work quarterfinal or semifinal playoff games.
3 -- This official is qualified to work first- or second-round playoff games.
4 -- This official is qualified to work varsity games.
5 -- This official is qualified to work underclass games only.

For the record this is only a small part of a larger system, but this is what you asked for so this might help.

Peace

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

There's little need to make a distinction between late round playoff games. Just make it simple:

4: Subvarsity only.
3. Lower level varsity games; some larger school non-district games.
2. All varsity; some rivalry games and first/second round playoff games.
1. All games.

It isn't as much a rating system as it is to be used for scheduling. You decide what level of official you want on certain games, such as 1-1-2 (3 person) for a rivalry game, or even a 2-3-3 for a girls non-district game involving 2 teams unlikely to make the playoffs. I've seen this done in a college conference I worked in years ago and it worked out well (1-3 with all R's a 1 or in rare cases a 2 on a non-conference game; 3's rarely worked any conference games).
