I play a game with myself each night I officiate. I pick one thing where I think I'm weak and try to concentrate and improve that aspect of my game. There were a few games this year where I had my "best" game for different reasons.
I wish I could say I had a "best" every night. I did have my share... |

I can happily report...
...that last night was my best game. And it was my best game, at least partially, for a rather ironic reason. The last time these two teams met, I had my worst game ever. Bad enough that I probably cost one team the game. I was absolutely sick about it for days.
In contrast, last night went very well. Even though the previously losing team made it clear they were very unhappy to see me again, I didn't let it affect my game. It was an absolute barn-burner--the previously losing team made the game winning shot with 1 second remaining. Even though I know there were a couple of things I missed, it was the best game I have called to date! I slept well last night

I'd have to say that "my best game" is a toss-up. (A) I had a game where, due to a no-show ref in a summer league, I ended up working a boys varsity game that I had no business in. Both teams had been in the state tournament the year before and went the next year. But my partner was very good, and very encouraging. He didn't take over, but gave me some good pep talks. I did a good job, kept control, and felt great. By the end of the game, the boys and I were chatting pleasantly, and both coaches told me I did a good job. One coach contacted the assignor and told HIM he'd be glad to have me anytime. I was high for weeks.
(B) Another boys varsity game at camp with two very good teams, fast pace, lots of tough calls, my commissioner, one of my class teachers from the past, and a mentor who helped me tremendously over the years all watching. I did a great job controlling a difficult coach, nailed a couple of block/charge calls and one no-call. Got my varsity status off that game. Still haven't come down off that high! |
