New Rule for 2011/2012

4-12-1, 4-12-2 & 4-12-6
Several definitions were changed to reflect that team control will now exist during a throw-in when the thrower-in has the ball at his/her disposal. The change primarily affects how foul penalties will be administered.

Let me get this in my mind so I don't have a problem with it for the rest of the year!

Assuming both teams are in the bonus....

Sitch 1
So if A1 has the ball for a throw-in and A2 runs over B2 and creates and offensive foul it is a team control foul and we DO NOT Shoot ft's correct?

Sitch 2
A1 has the ball for a throw-in and B2 hold A1 we shoot free throws?

Sit 1: That seems to be the intent. I have not seen the new rulebooks yet to know what the exact wording is, but my understanding they tried to emulate the NCAA rule.

Sit 2: Why would you even think this was a TC foul?

Peace

Yes, regardless of where A1's hands were (behind the line or over the line) when they were held.

By the way, your 2nd sitch is, I believe, changed to an automatic intentional foul.

I'm guessing that in Sit. 2, the OP may have not intended for the fouled player to be the thrower who still had the ball but a different player (A2) or perhaps A1 after the ball was released but before the throwin had ended.

In that were intended question, the FT would be shot or not according the the bonus.

Fouling the thrower-in has always been an INT, no? If that was a mistake, a defensive foul still has nothing to do with team control.

The change is simply for not awarding FTs for offensive fouls on a throw-in situation, just like we dont award FTs for illegal screens & player controls while the ball is live, inbounds.

Let's not overthink this, team control exist on a throw-in so for any foul committed by the offense the defense will not shoot.

I believe, up until this past season, it was only an intentional if the defender reached through the throw-in plane and fouled the thrower. Now, it doesn't matter where the contact occurs in relation to the plane.

So, A1 reaches the ball across. It's now perfectly legal for B1 to swipe the ball, but if he misses and hits A1's forearm, it's an automatic intentional foul. Stupid rule that I hope only lasts a season or so.

Delay of game warning, as in the past, for such intentional fouls? Or not, because the defender didn't actually cross the boundary line?

I'm going to have to be told very specifically by local leadership that this is supposed to be a D.O.G., too. Otherwise, it doesn't fit the rule.
