Cool

Boy's varsity tonight. I'm lead.
Partner calls a PC in BC and I initiate switch.
"Time-out."
I am properly standing on the end line, facing mid-court. I am properly holding the ball in front of me for the direction. I'm properly standing tall and remembering to hold in my stomach and waiting for the teams to return after a 30. I am "Dead ball officiating"!
White comes out on the floor, but nobody comes for the ball.
I yell, "white! White, WHITE" (progressively louder), and I hesitate to do it, but I put the ball on the floor cuz they were dawdling. Blue breaks the huddle.
Blue is now running toward me, and picks up the ball.
Again I yell, "WHITE!" and Blue looks at me apologetically, like I'm an idiot, and asks, "Isn't it our ball?"
"YU.P.", I answered. (I did have the proper direction.)

Now, that's presence!

hehe, thanks now I don't feel to bad.

The other night, I was doing an 8th grade boys game, and called OOB "Blue Ball!!" under Blue's basket. Player from Blue came over and stood OOB. Coaches both started sending guys to the table to sub, we let them in. Blue changed 4 including the guy who was waiting to inbounds the ball, white changed all 5. I'm standing there pointing towards Blue's direction so no one gets confused, a player from White comes over anyway and stands next to me OOB waiting for me to hand him the ball. Of course I do. Doh.

White inbounds the ball, neither me nor my partner recognize the error and White throws to a teammate under Blue's basket and he shoots the ball into Blue's basket. At this point both coaches are screaming.

Well, I called a TO and tought about it for a second (I'm the loniest man in the gym, my partner just shrugged his sholders) and gave the ball to white and told the score keeper to award the basket to Blue. It's a non correctable error.

Neither side was upset with the outcome, White was already winning by 30, but I felt like an idiot. Another lesson learned.

Mick,in your defense, you probably ended U.P. doing everything right(even if you did it by mistake).
-While White was dawdling,Blue was also still in their TO huddle-so you were right to put the ball on the floor for Blues's actual delay. The procedure was OK by rule.
-After a TO,you are also supposed to blow your whistle and say "defense ready".Therefore, hollering "White" after Blue picked up the ball is proper procedure, also.

If your partner's made you buy them a brownpop for this one, tell 'em that you want a rebate.

It's the people like Mick, who are willing to share their embarrassing moments and screw-ups that make all of us better.
Thanks.

According to the Chicago Sun Times (Thanks JR) a guy doesn't want to make too many mistakes in the public school leagues, ...but "Misery" still loves company.

The other night, 9-10 girls, ball out-of-bounds. I say "Red!" and point in the appropriate direction. Nobody moves, they all just stare. I try again: "Red!" and this time I point at the spot for the player to take it out. A little girl in a white shirt quickly steps to the spot. I say again, "Red!" and look at her with raised eyebrows. She keeps standing there, holding her hands out expectantly.
I try one more time, "Red!" Apparently she thought that I was either color blind or not too bright, because she grabbed the front of her own shirt and stretched it out in my direction (so I could see it better?) and said, "I'm white."

How about this?

Rec league 9 and 10 year olds. During throw-ins, everytime I gave the 10 seconds throw-in count mechanic, the kids would see my hand and throw the ball to me. Keep in mind this is the first time I reffed this age. I just stopped the 5 second count mechanic and kept it in my head.

The kids would give me that Mr Ref, do you want the ball look. Real Cute!!!!

Just a little advice: "Blue!" is much better than "Blue ball!"
