And I am pretty sure that most of you get this right. However, I have yet to see the ref award a baseline inbounds when the ball is touched in the lane in the backcourt. And never really means never, and this is coaching 80-100 games the past couple of years, all at MS level travel ball. I always see the ref walking back and pointing to half court, even when the ball gets touched by the baseline. That's a huge difference in my eyes - difference between an instant bucket and setting up your offense.
This is one of the most common misperceptions that I know of among refs. |

Hawks Coach,
You need to bring your team to Minnesota and have MN 3 Sport and I call your game! We would have the inbounds spot on the endline if the ball was touched in the lane! Maybe you get the wrong calls because you mostly see middle school officials that are just starting out, or experienced officials that have no desire to do any level higher than middle school. These officials tend not to have a high level of rules knowledge. Most of the middle school refs here would probably make that same mistake. If you ever come to MN let me know and I'll get in touch with 3 Sport and we'll do your game properly. Of course we'll probably have both coaches telling us to "call it both ways"! |
