Over and back is it a spot of violation or do we put the ball in at half court? I say spot of violation where the ball is touched in the backcourt.

I say you are correct!

Spot

It's not a violation until the ball is touched so you put it back in play at the spot of the violation.

And this is always done incorrectly in my experience.

Throw-in spot is the point closest to the violation - which occurs when the ball is touched.

Careful hawks, I bet there are more officials than not on this board why know where th inbounds spot is on a violation such as this. That is unless you were kidding.

Another coach questioning our knowledge and credability... :D

Maybe not.

MN 3 Sport Ref ,
I am pretty sure that I have never made this call properly for Hawks Coach. ;)

And I am pretty sure that most of you get this right. However, I have yet to see the ref award a baseline inbounds when the ball is touched in the lane in the backcourt. And never really means never, and this is coaching 80-100 games the past couple of years, all at MS level travel ball. I always see the ref walking back and pointing to half court, even when the ball gets touched by the baseline. That's a huge difference in my eyes - difference between an instant bucket and setting up your offense.

This is one of the most common misperceptions that I know of among refs.

Make this call right? I have yet to see Mick call a good game, and he has yet to see me do a competent job of coaching.

We wallow in mediocrity ;)

Probably b/c it's the NBA rule. The ball is always put in play at the midcourt line after a backcourt violation in the NBA.

Hawks Coach,

You need to bring your team to Minnesota and have MN 3 Sport and I call your game! We would have the inbounds spot on the endline if the ball was touched in the lane! Maybe you get the wrong calls because you mostly see middle school officials that are just starting out, or experienced officials that have no desire to do any level higher than middle school. These officials tend not to have a high level of rules knowledge. Most of the middle school refs here would probably make that same mistake. If you ever come to MN let me know and I'll get in touch with 3 Sport and we'll do your game properly. Of course we'll probably have both coaches telling us to "call it both ways"!
