Pivot Foot

Was trying to explain to a non-basketball type what a Pivot foot is and how it relates to traveling...I failed because there was a blank, deer in the head lights reaction!

In Plain simple English, How would u answer this question.

Thanks!

The pivot foot is the one that remains planted when a player picks up his dribble and steps with the other one.

That's close enough for someone who doesn't need to call traveling. 'Pivot foot' means something quite different in baseball.

I find it interesting that a "non-basketball type" would be interested in an explanation of the pivot foot and how it relates to anything.

Or maybe I need an explanation of non-basketball type.

It is probably someone that is not a coach of basketball or a person that watches basketball but is not an official or understands many basketball rules. I do not know about you, but when people know I am an official I get asked questions all the time about situations people see on TV or rules they think an official have missed.

Peace

For It's One, Two, Three Strikes, You're Out, At The Old Ball Game ...

Over the past eight months my family has gotten bigger with the addition of a Chinese daughter-in-law, and an Australian son-in-law. We will probably be going, as a family, to a minor league baseball game this summer. I'm sure that there will be a lot of questions. I can only hope that the infield fly rule doesn't come into play.

Tell him that if you nailed his foot to the floor and gave him a basketball, that foot would be the pivot foot. If he doesn't understand, then illustrate it.

Painful, but effective......

And, let him know if he does finally get it off the ground (floor) he can't put it back down!

Pivot Foot

It's the foot that the coach of the team whose player has the ball never sees move.

or

It's the foot of the player possessing the ball that the coach of the team on defense always believes has moved (and moved) without being seen by the official.

If a player is holding the ball, and picks up one foot, the other foot is the pivot foot.

Best bet might have just been to relate it to the pivot cheek.
