That's exactly what I thought was happening when I read PA Coach's description. As an official, of course I'd rather not have a coach stall by using the full 30 seconds to substitute or call a timeout for the purpose of staring me down. But live with it. When the coach wants a staredown, I usually find a reason to talk to my partner, or the scorers, and look the other way. Nothing is gained by a confrontation.

Actually it is the coach's responsibility to adjust to the way that the game is being called. The officials do have a responsibility to be consistent with each other and consistent as to the type calls that are made from start to finish. It is not the official's responsibility to call the game the way that the players may be used to seeing.

Not me. If a coach wants to stare and I notice it, I'll stare right back at him, smiling all the while. If that doesn't stop him, I usually ask him what he needs. He will not feel like he won, if I can help it. This is probably too confrontational, but it has worked for me.

I guess when I do that rare 7th or 8th grade game next time I should call it exactly the same way as my Division 5 Varsity Boys game and have 1000 or 1 foul respectively...

Of course an official has to call a consistant game and it is up to the players and coaches, fans, waterboys, etc to adjust to that "consistancy" if you will. I was simply stating (if you read my post) that different levels of ball dictate different judjement responsibilities on what is a foul/violation etc...

Stare down

I actually think that it is funny. If I was the official I would probably be a little annoyed if you were staring me down. But at that time I would probably go talk to my partner to let him/her know what is going on so that we don't have a problem later.

P.S. It being a "jerk move"...don't most officials already think coaches are jerks? You were just fulfilling your role j/k

Coach in Penn. I appreciate your honesty and agree with early comments about using your thirty seconds they belong to you and if you want to stare at me for them great as long as you don't say anything abusive. As far as calling games to help a team win its hard enough to just get the calls right. Here is a good example of coac complaining that I took as a huge compliment.Last night doing boys var. and I made a call and coach A says call it at both ends!I make a call at the other end and coach B says you guessed it call it at both ends! That made my night I almost had to call timeout to laugh.

I honestly didn't know there was such a thing as Division 5, what is that? I thought it only went to D-III.
