B1 and B2 trap A1 at mid-court and are standing foot-to-foot next to each other. A1 tries to step between them, displacing both B1 and B2 and tripping. I called player control. Should I have called a travel instead? A coach wanted a "tripping" call? I assume that is howler monkey for block.

A personal foul is a player foul which involves illegal contact with an opponent while the ball is live, which hinders an opponent from performing normal defensive and offensive movements.

Empahsis on "normal".

Almost have to see it to make the call. I'll go with whatever you said!

I'm not the resident expert on howler monkey to English translation, but your guess seems on target.

Without seeing the play, it sounds like a PC foul to me. See 4-7-2 C and 10.6.2 C. If B1 and B2 are no greater than 3 feet apart (or B1 is no farther than 3 feet from the sideline) and A1 pushes through them, A1 is primarily responsible for the contact.

Without seeing the actual play, but using your description...it very well could have been a Player Control foul...but I like the travel call here, just as you probably do also, since you had some doubt.

"Pretty hard to understand how it could be tripping when both defenders had their feet firmly planted, Coach."

Sleeper,
We have to mentally measure the amount of contact.
If the defender was knocked down or substantially off balance, then, yeah, go with a PC.
If the defenders were not really moved and the ball handler tripped over a planted foot forcing the ballhandler to make a wrong step, then go with the travel.
They pay us to interpret the rules fairly.
