They gave the kid the game ball and we switched to another ball and we continued the game. The ceremony took about 3 or 4 minutes and the game continued. The home team lost the game.

3-4 minutes? Seems a little too long for my liking. One minute should cover everything you need to know, and it really should be just a nice short gesture. Maybe do a pregame award at his home school, no wonder the kid looked embarassed.
