Oldest Referee in your Association

How old is the old guy/s?

Ours are 3 of them, 75,76 & 77.

All 3 have new knees and a hip on one or 2.

Two of the 3 of these guys are still pretty good. Better than most at any rate.

What I am amazed by is I am 55 and I don't know if I can make it to 60. They are in their 70's. Amazing. All 3 were gifted athletes when they were younger.

Worked with one of the oldest tonight. Not sure of his age but he's at least 70. Told us tonight he's been officiating for 52 years. I don't know if we have anyone else in their 70's in basketball.

I'm 50, I won't work past 60.

I know we have a few in their 70s. One guy should NOT be working. I initially thought I would go for 10 years, because I got a late start the second time around. But, it will be a season by season decision once I get to the 10 year mark. I suspect another 6-10 seasons.

My last association had two guys who started reffing during the Kennedy administration. One of them was a little bit beyond his shelf life, and often over his head. The other kept up just fine.

I have worked with a few guys in their 70's here. One guy I know is 72, the other I am not sure but know he is in his 70s. He told me he started calling ball in 1954 !! I wasn't even a gleam in my daddy's eye then

I am (almost) 49, and in my 22nd year of high school ball. My first year, I worked with an official who was in his 70's at the time. He had trouble moving, changing direction, and keeping up with the action, but his wisdom was priceless. Hats off, Al...wherever you may be......

No one past early 60's in my group now.......

I am 54 years old...don't really feel that old. Have a yearly work-out regimen and get paid to work-out at my job. We had a guy in his 70's working in our association until recently...now we have a few that are in their 60's.

I'm thinking about hanging it up soon...not sure when.

If you care...and if I actually figured out how to put my pic on this thing, the following pic is me in March of 2002...at age 45.

Edit: It didn't work...probably for the best.

I worked with a guy in our association last fall who was 69. Good rules knowledge, good game management, good guy. He just couldn't get up and down the court and keep up anymore.

Two year's ago I was on the court with him as the T and he was the L (three man) and on a long rebound I saw him get tangled up with a big kid who knocked him down going for the ball (he just couldn't get out of the way fast enough). Tore a tendon.

Similar to me (50), the mind is willing, but the flesh is weak...... Hopefully, I'll know when to hang it up.
