Anybody can sue anybody for anything. Does the Bangor Daily News have deep pockets?

You'd be interested to know that some of the situations that are published in our referee's weekly newsletter from our state administrator are copied verbatim from your "Most Misunderstood Basketball Rules" document. :)

I laughed the first time I noticed this.

Billy --

That joke failed to be funny well before the first time you posted it, and it hasn't improved in the approximately 100 times you've tried it here.

Back before the gap, the author was one of the instructors in my officiating class.

Then I must still be dreaming...

I explained a rule to a call and the fan said, huh, that does makes sense. I bout fainted right there!

He left out the most highly misconstrued one of all: "Over the back, ref, he's over the back!"

Agreed

Kids Say the Darndest Things ...

Airborne shooter releases the shot, returns to the floor, and is pushed by a defensive player. Ball doesn't go in. My partner, the lead, calls the foul, and states, "No shot". We're not in the bonus. As my partner goes to the reporting area, I become the new lead and I'm getting ready to administer the throwin. Fouled player is now the throwin player. He politely asks me, "Why don't I get any free throws. I was in the act of shooting?". I tell him that he was fouled after he returned to the floor, that he was no longer an airborne shooter, and that he was just a rebounder who got illegally pushed. Kid says, "You're right. I was just a rebounder. Thanks".

Most Misunderstood Rules

As the "original" author of this title, I feel compelled to say that the #1 commonly misunderstood rule is definitely the 3 seconds in the key rule, followed closely by the restrictions on a designated thrower-in (not travelling), and then either sliding/momentum after a loose ball (not necessarily travelling). All associations/groups should spend a reasonable amount of time teaching the nuances of these types of rules/situations.
My MMR Sheet was deliberately short so as to fit on one page one side.
BTW Billy Mac has done a great job of expanding on what I created.

"Something" is not illegal.

I've gotten to know this author over the last few years, and have worked several games with him. We've talked about "over the back," and he feels the same way we do. (I guess he just forgot or there was a space issue with the article.)

One time, Bob Cimbollek told me a coach was complaining about a player being over the back, and Bob looked right at the coach and said, "SO!?"
