I don't think I would ever go that route. But there are plenty of guys who chew gum during games, and I don't do that, either. If it works for them, and they are effective in managing a game, who cares?
But, the thing left unsaid by BillyMac is, wait for it....Aren't they violating the First Rule of Officiating?

Seen it too many times. I don't have a problem with no lanyard, but I do have a problem with "practicing" during a varsity basketball game. If you are going to do this, you best get comfortable with it during church leagues or someplace where you won't be humiliated, or worse, humiliate your partners.
