I was told by one veteran I've worked with several times already this season that if I want to move up, I should give a preliminary signal.

I was trained to always give a preliminary signal, along with color, number and foul at the spot of the foul. That said, very few of the people I've worked with do it that way.

I feel like we should provide a preliminary signal, but our association just wants it on block, charge, and handchecks.

There really is no other answer and it could vary from observer to observer.

And in other areas, giving a prelim on garden-variety fouls might keep you from moving up.

I give a preliminary when I feel it adds to the overall picture -- else, I don't.

We are told to use the "Four steps" and must give a preliminary signal at the spot of the foul.
