Last year, we had this huge discussion about simultaneous personal fouls and whether FTs were shot or not. Here's the play, from the IAABO Refresher Exam, #58:
While A-1 is dribbling, A-2 fouls B-2 and B-3 fouls A-3 simultaneously. Both team are in the bonus. Official awards both teams A one and one and resumes play with the alternating possession procedure. Is the official correct? The official IAABO answer was "Yes, the official is correct." Guess what? The NFHS answer is "No, the official is not correct." Many posters including, yes, of course, MTD Sr., said that the FTs must be shot. I disagreed and tried to explain that this sitch should be handled the same as simultaneous technical fouls. But no! You guys wouldn't agree with me! Well, I get the last word! The NFHS has clarified what was already clear to me and a few others. NF 4-19-9 A simultaneous foul (personal or technical) by opponents is a situation in which there is a foul by both teams which occurs at approximately the same time, but are not committed by opponents against each other. NOTE: No free throws are awarded and the ball is put in play by the team entitled to the throw-in under the alternating-possession procedure at the hearest spot (personal) or the division line opposite the table (technical). Wonder if this is why we haven't heard much from Mark D. in the last few months? He knows, TH doesn't forget! http://www.officialforum.com/showthr...6&pagenumber=1 |

BktBallRef,
Thanks for the clarification and congratulations on the vindication. Just remember, everyone likes a little @$$...nobody likes a smartass Course if you're like me lately, I'm right so seldom I want people to know when it happens

Well, Chuck was digging up old posts because he was bored, so I thought I'd have a little fun.
We discussed, argued and fought over this one for weeks. Sometimes the simpliest things can turn into the biggest disagreement. It was very clear to me. The RB stated very clearly that you wouldn't shoot FTs for simultaneous technicals, so why would you shoot them for simultaneous personals? Seemed pretty simple to me. |
