I had a rude awakening 3 wks ago. While working a football
scrimmage in the umpire position, the player being tackled rolled into my right leg, while a defender hit me on the left side. Result,12 stitches over left eye, broken right tibia. I was under the impression that our boards insurance covered us for injuries sustained during a game. Not so! I am also a soccer & basketball official. It is the same for those boards as well! My fellow officials were a little suprised. I am looking at getting extra coverage, not just for lost game fees but for workman's comp for being out of work at my regular job. Something to consider ot there. I should be ready to go by mid Oct. |

Umpire position.
Man, gotta stay away from the umpire position. The reason I am afraid of working that position for the very reason you got injured.
I hope you heal up and come back with a complete recovery. Peace

My association (for basketball) compared insurance options
and the differance in beifits was astounding. we went with IAABO as they we far and away the best here are some of the vitals: price: IAABO 12 NFHS 10 excess medical: iaabo 25,000 NFHS 10,000 deductible: IAABO 500 NFHS 2500 accidental death: IAABO 5,000 NFHS 2500 (they no longer cover cardiac or circulatory deaths and do not cover to and from the game) Dental: IAABO 2500 NFHS none physical therapy: IAABO: full coverage NFHS: none game fee reimbursement: IAABO up to 2500 at 50 per game NFHS none. how does this compare with NASO? alot of officals know they have insurance but do not know what they are covered for until it is to late..... make your association spell out what you are covered for on paper that is the only way you can compare. |

Interesting differences
Again, the system here in Australia is very different to the USA.
All players, coaches and officals must register with their local association before playing/training/coaching/refereeing. This registration fee is around AUD$75 per annum. Of this, approximately AUD$65 goes to the state governing body (in my case - New South Wales). This registration fee covers our insurance. It includes injury, disability and death insurance. I can't remember the exact numbers, but it covers around 75% of the cost of treatment for injuries, and will also cover loss of income for up to 6 weeks (there is also a maximum $ value). Again, I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but the payout for total permanent disability or death is around the AUD$250,000 ammount. On top of this, it also provides public and professional liability insurance up to AUD$10 million and free legal assistance and representation. Personally, I think this is a pretty reasonable level of cover, at a decent price. The way I look at it, is that I need to referee less than 5 games per year to cover my registration - everything on top of that is profit.
