5th Foul Proceedure
Ok...you'll probably just tell me to look in the book, but wanted to get a quick answer if possible.
Foul is called on A1 which is their 5th foul. Team B is in the double bonus and shooting two. When do you report to the coach that A1 has fouled out and then replace them? Do you wait until after the first shot is administered, as normal substitutions occur? Do you take care of the disqualified player right away, before any free throws are administered? If another player wants to sub in, do you just let them all come in before administering free throws? Anyway...it's gotten mixed up in my head. Thanks for the help, guys. |

Looks as though I found it...at least sort of:
4.14.1 SITUATION C: A1 is fouled by B2 and is awarded two free throws. The foul is B2's fifth foul. The new trail official reports the fifth foul to Team B's coach. Before a substitute is made, the lead official incorrectly permits A1 to attempt the first free throw. The officials realize the error and huddle to discuss the situation. This seems to indicate that it is normal procedure to take care of the disqualification BEFORE administering any free throws. It would also make sense to hold any other substitutions until after the first free throw is attempted. |

And no you do not wait for a normal substitution situation as things could happen with that player. They must leave ASAP. Peace

In other words, if A1 fouls B2 on a shooting foul and it is A1's fifth foul and B6 and B7 are at the bench waiting to sub in, they should be allowed in with A1's sub. They shouldn't have to wait until the second free throw. |

Now that all makes sense. It has always been weird in my head...don't know why. So...take care of the disqualification first, allow subs in and then administer the free throws. So much more streamlined!
