killer day
Double-head JH Boys tonight at 4:00. 7th grade first, then 8th grade. No freshmen game for whatever reason (and I'm glad for that).
First game (7th grade) went fine. Blow out game, home team won. Second game, however, is a totally different story. Ugly first half with a lot of loose balls, turn overs and missed basket. It was something like 15-10 at halftime. Second half starts, and I must have blown my whistle like 5 or 6 times in the first 1:30 for fouls. Some time later in the 3rd quarter I blow a whistle against the visiting team and the visiting team's head coach yells out "oh, you're finally using your whistle now". Boom, technical foul, coach sits. (I should tell you in the first half he asked me why I'm not blowing my whistle, to which I respond "I can't blow my whistle and make up a call coach") Coach stands up several times throughout the rest of the game and I kept telling him to "sit". Thinking he's not getting the picture, during a dead ball I went over to him and told him "coach, I don't think you get it. When you get a technical foul you loose the coaching box and must sit. That's the LAST time I'm telling you". That took care of that problem, hoping I wouldn't have to write up a report tonight. Tonight I had a first. Had to put time back on the clock. with 24-25 seconds left, home coach calls (sorry, I mean request) time out and I blow my whistle to grant it. Just as I'm blowing my whistle I look at the clock and was able to see 24.2 seconds before it wind down to 23.3 seconds by the time the clockperson stopped the clock. During the time out I went over to tell the timer to put 24.2 seconds back on the clock. with just the last few seconds counting down and a 3 point game, home team's big player is on the ground with the ball. Coach requests a time out and just as I'm blowing my whistle an opponent gets his hands on the ball. Knowing I acknowledge the time out and started blowing my whistle, I granted him the time out. Got some words from the visiting HC and AC, and got some boos and wow from the visiting fans, all thinking it should have been a jump ball. I simply told the coach "I heard the time out and blew my whistle before the held ball occured". Game ended with a three point shot attempt to tie the game, just bouncing off the rim for a miss. I doubt it, but did I do anything wrong (besides probably an ejection to the coach for standing during live play after telling him to sit several times). |
