killer day

Double-head JH Boys tonight at 4:00. 7th grade first, then 8th grade. No freshmen game for whatever reason (and I'm glad for that).

First game (7th grade) went fine. Blow out game, home team won.

Second game, however, is a totally different story. Ugly first half with a lot of loose balls, turn overs and missed basket. It was something like 15-10 at halftime.

Second half starts, and I must have blown my whistle like 5 or 6 times in the first 1:30 for fouls. Some time later in the 3rd quarter I blow a whistle against the visiting team and the visiting team's head coach yells out "oh, you're finally using your whistle now". Boom, technical foul, coach sits. (I should tell you in the first half he asked me why I'm not blowing my whistle, to which I respond "I can't blow my whistle and make up a call coach") Coach stands up several times throughout the rest of the game and I kept telling him to "sit". Thinking he's not getting the picture, during a dead ball I went over to him and told him "coach, I don't think you get it. When you get a technical foul you loose the coaching box and must sit. That's the LAST time I'm telling you". That took care of that problem, hoping I wouldn't have to write up a report tonight.

Tonight I had a first. Had to put time back on the clock. with 24-25 seconds left, home coach calls (sorry, I mean request) time out and I blow my whistle to grant it. Just as I'm blowing my whistle I look at the clock and was able to see 24.2 seconds before it wind down to 23.3 seconds by the time the clockperson stopped the clock. During the time out I went over to tell the timer to put 24.2 seconds back on the clock.

with just the last few seconds counting down and a 3 point game, home team's big player is on the ground with the ball. Coach requests a time out and just as I'm blowing my whistle an opponent gets his hands on the ball. Knowing I acknowledge the time out and started blowing my whistle, I granted him the time out. Got some words from the visiting HC and AC, and got some boos and wow from the visiting fans, all thinking it should have been a jump ball. I simply told the coach "I heard the time out and blew my whistle before the held ball occured".

Game ended with a three point shot attempt to tie the game, just bouncing off the rim for a miss.

I doubt it, but did I do anything wrong (besides probably an ejection to the coach for standing during live play after telling him to sit several times).

Seriously, sounds like you did everything right. Without being there, it would be hard to determine if you gave that coach too much latitude, but apparently you're going to reflect on it, give it some thought and use the experience as a learning tool. That should be pretty constructive in the long run.

He Doesn't Have to Sit The Whole Game ...

Just be careful with the "seatbelt" rule. Even after getting "seatbelted", the head coach may still stand within the coaching box to request a timeout or signal his players to request a time-out; may stand and/or leave the coaching box to confer with personnel at the scorer’s table to request a timeout for a correctable error, or a timing, scoring or alternating-possession mistake to be prevented or rectified; may stand within the coaching box to replace or remove a disqualified or injured player or player directed to leave the game; may stand during a charged time-out, or the intermission between quarters and extra periods; may stand to spontaneously react to an outstanding play by a team member or to acknowledge a replaced player, but must immediately return to his seat.

Yeah, I understand with these circumstances. I actually did just check the rulebook about the "seatbelt" rule. He was not standing to do any of those, he was standing pretty much to either watch the game or give out instructions to his player, which all warrants another technical. But yes, I have reflected on it and I probably should have given him another technical for not heeding my first several warnings when I told him to sit. Maybe he just didn't know that a technical takes away his coaching box and was wondering why I kept telling him to sit. I know ignorance of the rule is not a good excuse, but for something like this I wanted to make sure he got it by going face-to-face with him about it. Then, after that, if he would have stood up I would have given him a technical and put in the report that he had too many warnings, including the face-to-face I had with him to make sure he was aware of it.

Yes, you gave this coach far too many warnings without penalizing him.

Sounds like this coach will have many more opportunities to learn the seatbelt rule.

Never mentioned...

... whether the coach was notified by your partner that they had lost the privilege to stand and coach after the technical.

Was that notification given?

Who cares? That isn't a duty of the officials. There is absolutely NO REQUIREMENT that an official notify a coach of the loss of the box following a technical foul. It is the coach's responsibility to know the rule.

What planet do you live on?

Imagine using the words "coach", "know" and "rule" in the same sentence without the word "doesn't".

It was JH and at that level coaches are usually volunteer teachers or associates of the school. He probably didn't know which is why I gave him the benefit of the doubt and told him during a dead ball that he had to sit and that would be the last time I would tell him. He wasn't walking up and down the line at all, he would just stand in front of his chair.

Which is a good thing. Imagine what would happen if we had to tell the coach he must sit:

Coach: *yelling at you about whatever*
You: Technical foul!
Coach is mad enough
You walk over to the coach: Coach, you have to sit now
Coach yells more at you
You: Another Technical Foul! You're ejected coach!

Nevada,

with all due respect, I'm not ejecting a coach in this situation until I or my partner have had a direct conversation with him similar to the one the OP finally had with this coach. Particularly at the junior high level. That just seems to be good game management skills.

Now, you can argue, and I would agree, that the conversation should've happened sooner. But I am not taking such draconian action without being sure the coach understands the situation.

Over here, if one of us has to give the head coach a technical foul, we're switching with our partner, and any further conversation about the coach losing his coaching box will be told by them.

For an 8th grade game you have to write a report? To whom?
