Inadvertent Whistle--add points

Tonight in the Cincinnati-Pitt game, this situation arose...

Shot clock is at 3, and a Pitt player puts up a shot that misses the rim. His teammate, standing under the basket, catches the ball and puts it in well before the horn goes off.

Problem is, Jim Burr blew his whistle anticipating the shot clock violation. They now have an inadvertent whistle when Pitt should have two points. The crew confers, and I'm not sure they went to the monitor or not, but they ended up adding the basket to Pitt's total.

Was this the correct way to handle the situation?

Depends when Burr sounded his whistle. If he did it prior to the release of the putback, then the try should not have counted. If he blew after the try was in the air, then they got it right.

If I remember correctly, his whistle came shortly after the release, so sounds like they got it right.

I'm having a brain-fart moment. Does this also apply to NFHS? Let's say you blew your whistle for whatever reason that was inadvertent, but a shot is released already. Does it count or not?

Edit: released and shot goes through the rim.
