game assignments

this is my first year as an official and i have been working games that were assigned while i was in class but now that the class is over i havent got any calls for games. during the class different assigners came to talk to our class and they would say that they need hundreds of officials a week so there would be no problem getting a game. well i havent received a single call so either im terrible or im missing something. how did your guys' first year go?

Have you made contact with the assignors?

Are you apart of an association?

Do you have a mentor?

Have you provided availability dates?

If you answer no to any of these questions, you should take the steps to correct them. This would probably open assisgnments up for you.

You need to go to the assignors - they aren't going to come to you.

Echoing the previous replies:
1. Identify the assignors for the area and level you want to work. They may be listed in the local associations' web sites or in your state athletic association info. I have also found that calling your local schools / rec leagues and asking who they use to assign their games is very helpful.
2. Let the assignors know who you are, your availability and contact info. Keep them informed, but remember you need them more than they need you. When they do call, take the assignment regardless of level.
3. Go to the local association and get to know who's who.
4. Remember that everyone you meet knows someone you will want to meet. .

I was in your place 5 months ago. Since then 60+ games - mostly middle school, CYO, rec legue, but I have worked a few sub-varsity high school games. Good luck and let us know how it's going.

Assignors give games only to officials who use capital letters and apostrophes.

Is that now your SECOND rule of officiating?

Yeah, that's it. That's the ticket! (SNL)

Nothing will supplant the first rule and two others that I know about.

A great piece of advice, and applicable to more than just basketball.

You can edit your post and fix it. Then delete your second one and I'll delete this one. It'll be a conspiracy.

Too late, the jig is up. You would've gotten away with it too if it weren't for the meddling kids.

That's what private messages are for.

Case in point.

As I was planning ahead for next season, I decided I would be better off working for different secondary associations. Less travel and perhaps better games. I dashed off an email to a couple of assignors that have some schools within a 45 minute drive last week. Forgot about it until Sunday when one of them emailed me back & wondered if I could take a GV tournament game on short notice. Turns out that it was only about 90 minutes and the game was one of the best games I had all year. He gave me a couple of JH games which I took as a thank you for the game today.

The guys I worked with work for a neighboring assn, too, so I may look at them in the off-season.

unless im wrong (and i probably am) from what i heard you can't join an assoiciation untill after your first year.

as far as contacting assigners, when they came into our class they said after this class our names and contact info would be sent out along with what level our instructor thought we could handle.

as far as a mentor i would really like to have one but i guess im just lost cause i dont have one of those either.
