Go Get The Ball

JVB game last night, coach is upset about a no-call of mine and calls a timeout, ostensibly to yell at me. Meanwhile, his player who had the ball stares right at my partner (the R) while my partner asks for the ball. Then he tosses it into the bleachers as he walks to his huddle.

R gives the player three chances to get the ball, but he just ignores him.

Whack!

Now the coach spends half his timeout asking about the T rather than asking me about the no-call. BTW, he never asked me anything, just yelled. I couldn't hear him over the crowd at that point, and I had no interest in approaching him if he wasn't going to actually ask a question.

did you thank your partner for the diversion? coaches have short attention spans and can easily be distracted by something new and more controversial.

I'm surprised your partner didn't whack the kid as soon as he threw it into the bleachers

It wasn't as bad as it comes across, he just tossed it towards the bleachers and inertia took care of the rest. The stands were pretty empty on that side.

He tried to be nice and let him get it; the kid had a nice chat with him during the free throws.

You know. I just might eject that player. That is such an eggregious and flagerant disregard for sportsmanship it offends me to even read that it happened.

I need to confess also that I passed on a DOG warning and am kicking myself for it today. After a TO, I'm T table side, ball is being put in play along the endline; V ball, first half. Behind me I hear "wait a sec" and turn to see the coach using a towel on the floor. By the time it clicked in my head, I felt it was too late.

It's like the old story of when the player, instead of giving the ball to the official, throws the ball into the air and the official says, "If that comes down, you're outta the game!"

Called one first game of the year. Mr. Attitude tossed the ball away from me because he didn't like my partner's call. WHACK! No hesitation.

Whack, Black And White ...

10-3-5-b: A player shall not: Delay the game by acts such as: Failing when in possession, to immediately pass the ball to the nearer official when a whistle blows.

Autobiographical, Mark?

I agree, easy and immediate technical foul call.

Had a similar but slightly different situation a few seasons ago. My partner called the kid for a travel and he was pi$$ed. When I jogged to the throw in position (my side line) and asked for the ball, instead of throwing it in the stands, the player wound up and fired it directly at me at head level as hard as he could throw it, from a distance of about 10 feet. His "T" was flagrant........

... of a quick strike to the neck with fingers in simulated 'bite' position always works for me. Coaches live in the moment!
