Talking to the Head Coach

I was wondering if you guys could help me with this one. If you are working a game and your partner is over talking to one of the Head coaches (or argueing)for a long period of time and you are the official admin. the throw in.

Should you let the the kid inbound the ball and that will pretty much break up the conversation or just wait until they are finished talking?

I know that some of these conversations are more important than others but I have had a few of these instances where I have stood there with the inbounder for two or three minutes! I hope any of this makes sense.

Blow the whistle and put the ball in. I would not sit for any lengthy period of time unless my partner made it clear to not put the ball in play. Put the ball in play and go. You are not doing anything for the game by sitting there and doing nothing. Eventually the coach and official will have to pay attention to the game.

Peace

Concur with JRut - and, at your first opportunity (TO, half time, etc.), tell your partner to knock off the lengthy conversations and keep them brief and that you will be putting the ball in play "fairly quickly" in order to keep the game moving.

It more likely to occur with individuals but couldn't hurt to pregame, "Lets keep are conversations with coaches short and to the point. Use language that shows rule knowledge..." One problem I have with just blowing the whistle and putting the ball in play is that, I want my partner to know what I am doing. I will have eye contact with my partner or some sort of communication acknowledging WE'RE ready.

Putting the ball in play without all officials being ready and making eye contact is stupid/selfish...you choose the word.

Until I talk to the official at half-time or whatever, I will refrain from taking over the game.

It's not about me and my timeline, it's about p;erforming as a team out there.

I've had experienced partners tell me to get the ball in play in a situation like this. Give a reasonable amount of time, but unless your partner has his hand up, get it into play. It helps get your partner away from the coach.

What right does the coach have to delay the game? None.
If he wants to converse with an official, he can take a time-out.
Otherwise, it is inappropriate to hold up the game.

I too would blow the whistle and put the ball in play.

Thats how we pregame it. No hand up away we go-hand up you stand there till no hand up.....It has worked very well for me.

Completely agree...if the coach wants to chit chat, he needs to request and be granted a time-out. Otherwise both he and your P are causing an unnecessary delay in the game. This is always part of my pre-game.
