I need your name and number

So last night, I was in a small town Missouri and this team was down by 3 with .2 on the clock. The kid catches the pass and shoots a 3 and it was good before the horn goes off. After talking to my partners, we waved the shot off because the player didn't tap the ball in, but instead caught and shot the ball. The losing coach wants an explanation on why the bucket didn't count and didn't like my answer, but went on to the locker room. Meanwhile, while in the dressing room, a mom, (ex-official basketball official) wants my name and number so she can call and complain to MSHSAA. I told her to get out of my face and she had no right to talk to me after a game. WE had a little mob after the game, but the police were on hand and they escort us to our cars. Never seen this happen before, but glad the police was on hand.

Good call, know the rules, you cannot catch the ball with .3 or less on the clock, it has to be a tap as you said. Although as Derek Fisher showed us a few years ago, you can catch and release with .4 seconds. Does not matter how slow the clock operator is on starting that clock in this case. Unfortunately if you have an older clock system that doesn't deal with tenths of seconds you would count it.

Just ignore idiots like this after the game or have game management deal with them.

My question, just for clarification, is why did you have to get together with your partners to wave off the shot? Did you communicate with each other late during a dead ball to make sure everyone was on the same page and it had to be a tap? I only ask because getting together may give the impression that you are unsure. Normally in these situations I try to communicate that it must be a tip, wave it off if hard if it doesn't go, and haul buns outta there.

Nice job by the school to have an escort ready btw.

I've been told "if the shot isn't going to count, start waving it off before it goes in!" Since you knew before the throw-in they could not catch & shoot, as soon as they catch it you can wave it off, horn or no horn.

Agree with this. Game/situational awareness goes a long way in preventing problems.

This is somewhat similar to the South Carolina Championship where the officials got together and waved it off although with much more time on the clock. If official made a call right away, it might have just been another exciting finish.

I had a similar situation in a JVB game last year. Visiting team is down by two coming the length of the court with under 5 seconds to play. As V1 drives toward the lane, he catches the ball on his hip on what would have been his last dribble and then takes his two steps for a running shot. So, he ended up taking three big steps for his lay-up, don't you know it, but the shot went in as the final horn blew. I was lead right on top of the play and waved off the shot and called a traveling violation. My partner closed in quickly from the trail with the same call. Game over.

My coach reacted by yelling at me and calling me terrible but we had no incident. My partner and I walked into the locker room, discussed the play further, and then went on our way.

I'm a little confused -- what was a mom doing in your dressing room?
