Inadvertent Whistle Situation
My game was cancelled tonight because of a water main break at the school, so I went to watch a local game.
Boys Varsity, 4th Quarter, 0:45 remaining Home 44, Visitors 43 H1 dribbling ball in H's backcourt, has the ball knocked loose by V1. The ball is bouncing near the sideline, opposite the table. V2 is coming close to securing the loose ball in V's frontcourt. Right before V2 reaches the ball, H Coach starts requesting a timeout. U1 blows his whistle to grant the TO, then realizes that he accidently stopped play for the timeout request. U1 calls inadvertent whistle, does not grant a TO, and awards the ball back to H because they were last in team control of the ball. V coach started going crazy (as expected). The correct procedure was used to resume play (with the exception of granting and charging a timeout); it was an unfortunate accident. This is one reason why I hate giving coaches the privelge to call timeouts from the bench.
