Boys varsity game. Less than one minute to play, home team is losing 54-50. Home player is fouled and goes to the line for two shots. Lead bounces the ball to him...he dribbles once, dribbles twice, dribbles three times and then bounces the ball off of his foot. He steps in the lane to retrieve it. BAM! Violation. Shoot the second free throw.

Everyone in the gym saw what happened and no one argued about the call (how could they?).

However, this play made me think of how you'd handle a "variation" of this. Suppose his third dribble goes off of his foot, at an angle that takes it right to his teammate standing (legally) at his spot on the lane? After ensuring the ball has rolled out of the lane, his teammate picks up the ball and bounce passes it back to the free throw shooter. He makes the free throw. All of this transpires within the 10 second time limit.

Legal? I don't have my books with me so I can't check right away.

The case play on this was changed this year -- it's a violation as soon as A1 dribbles the ball off his foot.

Bob is right that a violation occurs.

The change was last year (2007-08) not this year.
