Free Throw-2 man; huh?
On page 23 of the 07-09 officials manual, Diagram 2-12 shows the Trail with the shooter and the 3 opposite lane postions; the Lead with the 3 opposite lane positions. This seems to make sense, with the change in the move of the lane positioning as oppossed to the old way of lead with the nearest 1st postion and across the lane. However, page24, 2.2.3 B 6. says "Watch the first space on the near lane line and all the spaces on the opposite lane line for violations and give the etc..."
I vote for the diagram. Which is correct? Collins |

That picture was made with the 2007-08 rule in mind. Therefore, it does show the Lead observing the first defensive player who was positioned BELOW the block on the near side of the lane as well as the possible three players on the opposite side. You are forgetting that the line-up and the FT lane spaces were only changed beginning with this season (2008-09), but that a new manual won't be printed until next year. |

Thanks Nevadaref, to compensate for the new positioning, I put red dots in to make my visual mind clear. Now I see what you are saying and appreciate your input as always. So much for trying to be practical, my own visual tool visually impaired me. Thanks again Nevadaref.

Back To The Future ???
I liked the NFHS old, old way better. Lead had opposite lane. Trail had opposite lane and shooter. I was hoping that with the new marked lane space rule, that we would go back to the old, old rule, but no such luck. The old, old rule was easy to remember, and I'm willing to bet that some of the veteran, veterans on my local board never realized that the mechanics changed several years ago, and that they're still using the old, old mechanics. You can't teach an old dog ...

Which leads to ask, any speculation, input or thoughts on which will change. The diagram to reflect the wording or the wording so that the L has opposite lane line and T the shooter and opposite lane line, and of course players behind 3pt and free throw line extended. I am of the same opinion as Billy, I prefer the latter, just my 1 cent worth.
