Funny Myth Test

A year or so back, someone posted a 10 or 12 T/F question test regarding myths of basketball. My computer crashed and I lost it. I dont remember who posted it (billymac, Mark, dunno) but I remember the answers were all the same. I would like to use it with a volunteer group of officials and coaches with my church group. Anyone remember the post??

Thanks

1) ON AN INBOUND PLAY, IF THE INBOUNDER MOVES MORE THAN THREE FEET BACKWARDS BEFORE INBOUNDING, IT’S A VIOLATION
2) A PLAYER CANNOT BEGIN A LEGAL DRIBBLE BY PUSHING THE BALL TO THE FLOOR WITH BOTH HANDS
3) PLAYERS MAY PLAY WITH EARRINGS AS LONG AS THEY ARE COVERED TIGHTLY WITH MASKING TAPE
4) WHEN INBOUNDING IN THE FRONT COURT, IT IS A VIOLATION TO INBOUND THE BALL TO A PLAYER IN THE BACK COURT
5) IF A PLAYER DIVES FOR A LOOSE BALL, GRABS THE BALL AND HIS MOMENTUM CAUSES HIM TO SLIDE, IT IS A TRAVELING VIOLATION
6) IF AN INBOUNDER IS HOLDING THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS AND A DEFENDER REACHES ACROSS THE LINE AND PUTS BOTH HANDS ON THE BALL, IT IS A HELD BALL
7) IF A PLAYER SHOOTS AN AIR BALL, THAT PLAYER CANNOT BE THE FIRST TO TOUCH THE BALL BEFORE IT COMES DOWN AND HITS THE FLOOR
8) IF A PLAYER IS HOLDING THE BALL AND A DEFENDER HITS THE BALL HANDLERS HAND CAUSING THE BALL TO BECOME LOOSE, IT IS A PERSONAL FOUL
9) IF A PLAYER REACHES OVER ANOTHER PLAYER’S BACK TO GRAB THE BALL, IT IS A PERSONAL FOUL
10) IF A PLAYER IS DRIBBLING AND BOUNCES THE BALL OFF THEIR FOOT, THEY CANNOT RUN AND RECOVER THE LOOSE BALL

Answers are all False.

Basketball knowledge test (Easy to grade!!!)

Here's 'mine'. (Don't know where I cribbed it from but I have made some mods)

YOU MAKE THE CALL!!
Answer true or false to each question. All questions pertain to standard High School rules. In all questions, team
A is on offense and team B is on defense.
_____ 1) A1 passes to A2 who does not catch the ball cleanly. The ball hits his hands and then it drops to the
floor. A2 then grabs the ball and begins to dribble. This is a violation on A2.
_____ 2) A1 is inbounding in his front court. He inbounds to A2 who is also in frontcourt. The inbound pass hits
A2 in the hand, deflects into backcourt where it is first touched by A2. This is a violation on A2.
_____ 3) A1 is dribbling in the backcourt. As he approaches half-court line,he dribbles the ball once in the
frontcourt and steps into the frontcourt with one foot. He then touches that same foot in the backcourt.
This is a violation on A1.
_____ 4) A1 dives for a loose ball and while on the floor, grabs the ball with both hands. His momentum causes
him to roll over twice. This is a violation on A1.
_____ 5) A1 attempts to shoot a jump shot. B1 blocks the shot by putting his hand directly on the ball. A1 is
unable to release the shot and returns to the floor holding the ball by himself. This is a violation on A1.
_____ 6) A1 shoots toward his basket. The ball misses and does not hit either the rim or the backboard. Before
the ball hits the floor, it is caught by A1. This is a violation on A1.
_____ 7) Team A has used all its timeouts. During a dead ball, A1 requests a timeout. Team A is not allowed this timeout.
_____8) A1 is fouled and appears to be injured. The official beckons Coach A onto the court to attend to A1.
However, before the coach can come onto the floor, A1 gets up and says he can continue. A1 is allowed to stay
in thegame at that point.
_____9) A1 is dribbling the ball. B1 goes up to A1 and, while making an attempt to play the ball, he pushes A1
off the court and into the bleachers. This is a common personal foul on B1.
_____10) A1 is wearing a gold stud earring during warmups. Before entering the game, the earring is covered
with athletic tape. The game officials declare A1 is legally equipped and can participate in the contest.
_____11) A1 is dribbling the ball in his backcourt following a throw-in. The official reaches seven seconds in his
ten second count. A1 requests and is granted a timeout. When Team A inbounds following the timeout, they will
have three seconds to get the ball into frontcourt.
_____12) Player B2 is using a wristband that is placed above the elbow on the upper arm. The player is legally
equipped and may participate in the contest.
_____ 13) Following a made basket by Team B, A1 will inbound on the endline. Prior to throwing the ball in, A1
asks for a timeout and it is granted. When Team A comes back to inbound the ball, they have lost the right to run
the endline on the inbound play and there will be a spot throw-in instead.
_____ 14) While shooting a two-point shot, A1 is intentionally fouled by B1. The shot goes in the basket. The
basket counts and A1 will be awarded one free throw, then Team A will get possession of the ball for a throw-in.
_____ 15) A1 attempts a shot. Prior to his leaving the floor, B1 establishes and maintains legal guarding position.
A1 releases the ball toward the basket, then falls on B1. The shot goes in the basket. The basket counts and
A1 is charged with an offensive foul.
_____ 16) During the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, immediately following a basket by A1, Team B
requests and is granted a timeout. After the timeout, Team B may, at their option, inbound at the midcourt line.
_____ 17) A1 is standing in the frontcourt with his feet inside the lane. After two seconds, A2 takes a shot and
the ball rebounds to A3. Two secondslater, A3 takes a shot. A1 has been in the lane a total of 4 seconds. This is a
violation on Team A.
_____ 18) A1 shoots from the deep corner. The ball hits the side of the backboard. The official should immediately
whistle a violation.
_____ 19) A1 is dribbling the ball. The ball bounces high and he dribbles once with his hand higher than his
shoulder. This is a violation on A1.
_____ 20) Following a violation by Team B, A1 is inbounding on a spot throw-in. While holding the ball, he
begins to pivot on his left foot. He takes a step backwards then pivots on his right foot. This is a violation on A1.

ANSWERS ON REVERSE

SURPRISE!!!! FALSE is the correct answer to all 20 questions. The purpose of this test is to foster greater
rules knowledge to allow you to become a better player, coach, spectator or parent. Don’t be surprised if you
see some of these calls made incorrectly thru the year. Refs are human but just remember, there are only two
people in the entire gym who do not have an emotional interest in the outcome of the game---the guys in stripes.

1)Key point, player never gained control. This is defined in the rules book as a fumble and is NOT the start of a dribble
2)No team control on throw-in. Player never had control in frontcourt. There are 3 criteria for backcourt violation
1-must establish team control in front court, 2-must be last to touch ball in frontcourt and 3-must be first to
touch ball after it has touched floor in backcourt.
3)Key here is DRIBBLING. Dribbler does not gain frontcourt status til both feet AND the ball are touching in
frontcourt. Different rules for a pass. Basic tenet of bball is “You are where you last touched on the floor until
you touch again. This pertains to in/out of bounds and front/backcourt. When you jump from out-of-bounds,
you are out until something is touching inbounds and nothing is touching out-of-bounds.
4)Movements caused by MOMENTUM are not considered violations. Players are accountable for movements
after momentum stops.
5)This meets the definition of held ball or jump ball and possession will be determined by the arrow. If the
shooter releases the ball for a shot and the defender blocks it, it is a loose ball and can be retrieved by any player
on the court without penalty. Team (and player) control ends with a shot, even if the ball only travels 2 inches.
6)Related to 5 above. Anything that is considered a shot results in a loose ball and no team control. Any player
on the court can retrieve ball without penalty. NBA RULES ARE DIFFERENT. “SELF-PASS” does not exist
in the high school rules set.
7) A team can always ‘buy’ at a the cost of a technical foul which, in HS ball is ALWAYS 2 shots and loss of ball
8)Once a player is injured to the point a coach is summoned, they must leave the game OR the injured player’s
team can call a timeout and the (now recovered) injured player may return
9) This is an INTENTIONAL or FLAGRANT foul based on severity, not a common foul. Flagrant=ejection
10)For safety purposes, HS rules forbid the wearing of any jewelry, visible or not. No penalty, just cannot play.
11)This is only true when millionaires are on the court. In HS, the timeout resets the 10 second count.
12)Wristbands and other equipment must be worn as intended. Wristband=WRISTband not bicep band. Point of
emphasis this year and WILL be strictly enforced.
13) Absolutely FALSE, trust me...
14)Foulee will shoot TWO free throws with lane cleared. Even on made 3 point shot) Intentional fouls ALWAYS
result in loss of possession and opposing team will inbound ball at point nearest to where foul occurred.
15)With very rare exception, no points can ever be scored on plays that involve offensive foul. Men’s NCAA and
NBA differ. Since last year, neither player control NOR TEAM CONTROL fouls result in the fouled team
shooting free throws even if they are on bonus situation.
16)This only applies to NBA games.
17)READ and REMEMBER. The 3 second count is reset EVERY time a shot takes place and does not accumulate.
18)The backboard has 6 faces;2 sides, top, bottom, front and back. 5 faces are in bounds, only the back is outof-
bounds. Any supporting pipes, straps and wires ARE out-of-bounds
19)You may want a carry or palming call here. Did the ball come to rest with the dribbler’s hand under the ball?
20)All throw-in plays on the sideline are ‘spot’ Some throw-in plays from the baseline are ‘spot’.
The HS rules book (without regard to logic and semantics) defines the ‘spot’ as being 36” wide and having
infinite depth. It is further stipulated that pivot foot restrictions DO NOT APPLY. The designated ‘spot’ is at the
middle of the 3 foot wide area and the inbounder must keep one foot on OR over the area. Common rule of
thumb allows one sideways step to either side or numerous steps backwards as long as you do not touch walls or
bleachers. In other words, do not feel you are nailed to the floor and immobilized during throw-ins but do
release the ball before the official reaches 5 seconds. Old timers may remember the ball had to be touched by a
player in-bounds within 5 seconds but that no longer applies. Neither does the requirement to call a time-out
before the count got to 4 seconds.
