You know we have all heard the chants of:
Three seconds Over the Back Get em off Call it at both ends... I've heard a new one the past couple of nights... "How can you call that the ball is loose?" Doesnt matter if they tackled or held them. My favorite one last night... Did the same team back to back. The team is setting incredibly terrible screens. I call one and then after a few more trips up and down the foor I call another. The coach yells at me "That's two!" The next game a player sets a pick and won the "Walter Peyton would have been proud" award for the night, It was an easy call, and he yells at his player, "That's a great pick, I dont know what the hell he is watching!" Whack! Oh well another fun night on th floor! |

One I am hearing now is "He was out of control" - referring to the ball handler after I call a block on the defense.
My response to the HM is usually, "Do you mean he didn't fit the rulebook definition of player control, or the rulebook definition of team control? Because, that's the only kinds of control the rules allow me to recognize. Please explain to me which one, and why - according to the rules. I'll wait." Then, I just stand there and stare at his pants. Occasionally, I also puke on his shoes. Wow - haven't used those in a long time. Challenging an HM on the rules usually gets a response something like this -

Ok,
I'm going to continue with my pain in the a** status. I think there is some credibility to a coach complaining that a player is out-of-control. If I'm reffing a play and the player is a whirling dervish, and out of control, I will more than likely not require the defense to be as "legal" as I would otherwise. I don't know exactly how the NF and NCAA books read, but the NBA/WNBA manual reads, "a player must be in control of his/her body at all times." However, I've heard that chant before as well. Just saying, don't always discount that statement. |
