I like to talk to them.

"Hey, watch your pivot."
"Watch the line." (works well for 3-pt shooters)
"Seven, Eight, Nine, Nine and a half, Nine and three-quarters...."

A big time D1 official who frequents this forum (well... the baseball thread mostly) tells me he likes when players ask him what time it is.

I really don't know why.
