Question Unsportsmanlike or not?

Ran into a fellow official at the store this morning and he related this to me. This past season he was working a JV boys game. A1 made a clean steal in his front court and took off on a breakaway. While he was going toward his basket, Coach B started yelling "TIMEOUT, TIMEOUT, TIMEOUT". A1 just continued and layed the ball in. Coach A lobbied the refs for an unsportmanlike T on coach B for doing that, claiming he was trying to trick A1 into pulling up. My buddy told Coach A there was nothing they could do in that situation. We then briefly discussed some variations to see if a T would ever be warranted. We both agreed that we might call it in a low level kids recreational game whether or not it had any effect on the player's drive, but not in any situation other than that.

What do you guys think? It was obvious to my buddy that Coach B really was trying to trick the kid and not that he might have thought he really good get a timeout granted then. Of course, to know that exactly, one would have to be able to read a coach's mind, and we all know that's like trying to drink from an empty cup.

*THE* store Mark? You only have 1 store in your neighborhood? Is this like one of those super walmart things where they sell everything you could possibly need from pet needs to plumbing?

I can't imagine giving a T for this.

Sounds like there are only 3 reasons for him doing what he did:
1) He's ignorant of the rules and actually thought he could get a time out called at that point.
2) He was trying to trick A1 into pulling up and stopping.
3) He was trying to trick the officials into blowing the whistle.

Since it's a JV game, 1) is a possibility. If that's what the officials thought, let it go and explain the rule to the dufus at the next stoppage. Who knows?..maybe he'll be a V coach someday and he really needs to learn.

As for 2) or 3), If ya know the guy and he's been around long enough to know better, I'd whack him. Sounds unsporting to me.

It was the local adult video store, but I didn't want to mention it. I was renting that new kinky Billy Packer - Rosie O'Donnell video. OOPS!

I am not every calling a T for this. At least not for the reason the coach wanted me to call a T for.

Peace

No T from me, unless coach A lobbied too hard. He wouldn't like the results, though.

Bad Zebra missed two possible reasons.

4) He's telling his kids to request a timeout as soon as the ball goes through.
5) He's directly requesting a timeout once the basket is scored.

My answer: Wait for the basket to go in, then grant the coach his timeout and don't allow him to withdraw it.

Yeah, you just stay over here under the basket. *I'll* go talk to the coaches and see if I can get our damn ratings up.

See, now you're just clinging to your bitterness and antipathy.

Make sure it's a big bus - if it's one of those small, short buses he might survive.
