Fouling off ball to gain an advantage is just ridiculous and this rule need to be changed.

You can't look at it as if it's basketball. It's the NBE....pro wrasslin' with a ball.

1) Fouling off the ball is no more ridiculous than fouling on the ball.

2) Fouling off the ball "to gain an advantage" is redundant, since if there were no advantage, it wouldn't be a foul.

3) Why does the rule need to be changed? Do you even know what the rules are regarding these fouls?

4) There already is a rule that specifically covers this play. It's called an "Away from the play foul". It's basically the same as an intentional foul in high school or college.

5) Fanboys. Yawn.

I'm sure if you contact the NBA they'll get right on it.

The easiest way to fix this problem is to have Shaq actually practice his free throws. His form is awful, he has not rythm. The best free throw shooters follow the exact same routine every time they shoot. It amazes me that he still can't hit a free throw. During the game they showed the NBA career worst free throw list and the only other recent player was Chris Dudley and his form was equally bad.

Similar to how Arnold Schwarzenegger can still speak such bad english even though he's lived in the States for 30 years! I don't get it.

In the NBA, this applies only in the last 2 minutes of the game, does it not?

Yup. But isn't that usually when it's done? Not much reason to intentionally foul Shaq in the middle of the 2nd quarter.

Say what?

Then why did San Antonio do it in the THIRD quarter?

... Late in the third Spurs coach Gregg Popovich started the so-called "Hack-a-Shaq" — having his players intentionally foul O'Neal, a 52% career free-throw shooter. It backfired, though, and O'Neal went 5-of-6 from the foul line during the span. "I think he made the strategy look stupid," Popovich said.

Probably have Gino and Alphonse take him out behind the wood shed.

Others have previously suggested granting the fouled team the choice between the FTs or possession (and a new shot clock to go with it).

Camron - I think that would be a fair arrangement. Here's something else to consider, however it's sort of convoluted. If an "off the ball" foul occurs, any player on the team that was fouled (who is on the floor) can shoot the free throws. If there's an 85% shooter on the floor, there's really no point in fouling off the ball against a 52% shooter.

I think Rick Barry would have loved this one.
