Inadvertent Horn

This happened in a game (FED) last week. Home team down by three points with 4.0 seconds remining on the clock. Visiting team is shooting free throws. Visiting team has dropped all players but one back for the free throw. Just as the free throw is hitting the rim, the horn goes off. The shot is missed and rebounded by the visiting team. How should this have been handled?

Play on. V team is just going to dribble the last four seconds out anyway.

I give up -- why would H drop all players back in this situation? They could miss the FT on purpose and try for the rebound and a three-point shot, or make the FT and try for a steal or a quick foul.

The play still doesn't make much sense to me -- how did V get the rebound if all its players had "dropped back" -- sure, it's possible for the shooter to get it, but what the heck were the home team rebounders doing?

In any event, either ignore the horn and continue play, or blow the whistle if everyone stops and give the ball back to the team in control.

Can a basket be counted after the horn if the Ref knows there should be time on the clock? Say on a FT time starts when ball hits rim but not player. A couple of seconds go by ball bouncing around. Player gets rebound, buzzer, he then scores. Count basket? Of course that would be awful in a close game and even worse if the defensive stopped.

Many years ago, after an inadvertent horn sounded, I said to a coach, "I can't help it if the score crew inadvertently gets horny." After I said it, I remembered that one of the crew was his wife!!!

Not really. You don't know his wife.

Mark Padgett: Aren't you on strike? Won't you get in trouble for writing these jokes, or have you signed a special agreement like Letterman did with his writers.

Actually, I'm only writing for this Letterman. It's an easy job, because he only has one letter.

Did you write "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You", one of my favorite Lettermen songs?
