Requesting a Lineup?

Has anyone heard of this. I was going around though my dads old tapes of himself refereeing and I came across this call he made. It's called 'Requesting a Lineup'.

Basically the coach asks for a request. ONLY if there are 4 or 5 subs entering the game from the same team. Basically they are there lineup at half court and they are able to matchup.

Anyone heard of this? Any reference I can look up?

Thanks

ROFLMAO! Not laughing at you RCBSports. It is just a little used rule that is valid in both NFHS and NCAA. Whenever a team three players from one team enter that game during the same substitution period, the captain for either team can request a line-up. It is usually a simulated jump ball situation at the center circle. Ah, don't you just love the ancient ways.

Yup, definitely in there. At a Rec Sports conference this weekend, so I can't quote the rule, but I know it's in there.

Never actually had a coach request it though! But it makes sense if team A is subbing 4 players and has the ball in FC for a throw in, Team B might request a lineup so that team A doesn't quickly inbound the ball for a score before Team B players know who they are guarding!

I was actually asked TWICE about that exact rule last year, by coaches no less. It's there, but haven't actually ever seen it used.

Rarely if ever used in high school ball. At least, I've never seen it.

And we treated it during those years as if it didn't exist.

Every time a team brings 3+ into the game, I'm ready for it, just in case. Probably haven't had the request in 10-15 years, though.

How many people notify the captains that the ball is about to be tossed?

I've done it once. Prolly 3-4 years ago. Throw in for B. I emptied my bench, assigned them to their (wo)man. B calls TO. Empties his bench, so I asked for a lineup.... not an official looking one at the jump circle, just for some time before the throw in for my subs to get reorganized.
