Correct signal

Boys Varsity game last week I was watching. Player punched the ball out of defender's hands which is a violation. What is the signal for this? Ref went with a closed fist ala a charge, without pointing fist in the other direction which probably is as good as any, I've just never had it happen in any game I've done nor viewed.

#26 -- "other violation" (or don't make any signal at all).

OK, after doing this for 8 years, I am going to look stupid. Why is it a violation to " Punch" the ball out of an opponents hands?

Unless the ball goes out of bounds, I've got nothing. unless there is contact, I've got nothing. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

My rule book is in my bag at home so i can't quote chapter and verse but it is a violation to strike the ball with the leg or FIST.

That's a dang good question!

If you PUNCH, you have TC!
If you use ILLEGAL HANDS...you have to call a foul...
Can't use the KICK signal...
BLOCK wont work...

I've got it...Double Fists...hell, a lot of guys make up signals like the superman (over the back) anyway

Nope...double fists, out to the side, is a "double foul" signal.

Unless you mean...two fists "punching" each other. Then, sure, add it to your mechanics.

I would assume a safety issue............

SECTION 4 TRAVEL, KICK, FIST
A player shall not travel with the ball, as in 4-44, intentionally kick it, as in 4-29, strike it with the fist or cause it to enter and pass through the basket from below.
NOTE: Kicking the ball is a violation only when it is an intentional act; accidentally striking the ball with the foot or leg is not a violation.
PENALTY: The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation.

Oh yeah...forgot the ol' double foul!

Could just break out the Ali "Rope a dope"

I'm not into the creation of signals...I ref mainly JRHS/AAU/Travel league stuff and I can not STAND it when I work with guys who freelance on their signals....it's a pet peeve of mine.

It's not a HS game granted but man, if you are gonna do this, use the approved NFHS signals for cryin' out loud!
