Q from 1st Year: Time out substitutions

In the games that I have worked so far, I never even think about whether substitutions have been made during time outs, whether they have been reported properly.

Any advice for how to perceive, and manage these properly?

Again, I'm starting from nothing on this, and I haven't had a partner who offered any awareness of it either.

You really dont care who subsitutute during time outs until the first buzzer... After that you do because they cant come in after that... People can check in, change mind, go back etc...

and out come 5 whites and 5 blues.

Do I need to know that they were the SAME 5 whites and 5 blues that were on the floor when the timeout was granted?

No. That's the scorer's job (although not all do it correctly -- especially at the lower levels)

In my experience, if there's going to be a problem, it'll be just as the players are returning to the floor. You'll see somebody check in with the scorer before stepping onto the floor. Don't let your the ball back in play until you've asked the scorekeeper whether that person just checked in, and wasn't in before the time out. If that's the case, then bring them back out and get the original player back in.

I agree! However, if I'm the one getting the teams out of the huddle, I'll always signal to my partner that we have five players on each team out and we're good to go. This way, we don't have players running onto the floor at the last second.

Could someone explain the correct way for the scorer to do this? Thanks.

Keep a list of who is in the game, and then who subs in / out.

So, if the starters are 1 though 5, the list is:

1
2
3
4
5

If 11 and 12 enter for 3 and 4, the list is:

1
2
X, 11
X, 12
5

If 3 now enters for 1, the list is:

X, 3
2
X, 11
X, 12
5

If after a TO, those aren't the 5 on the floor, hit the horn.
