Anyone else notice the abundance of game management posts today? Is it that time of year where the coaches are more vocal and we're tired of listening to them?

Well for me as a 1st year ref.it has taken this long to start interacting with the coaches. Up until recently i have done the ignore them and maybe they will stop yelling at me thing. i have thought maybe we could open the Frosh games with a gym chant of "Travelling" and also "thats a foul' and then maybe everyone would get it out their system early.

Actually, I really haven't had any problems with the coaches this year. However in the area, (I've only had one problem) I've been hearing about a lot of problems with the fans. I only had one little problem with a coach and I think he thought he could speak his mind a little more freely since I'm from around the area---nope, took care of this real quick.

I've heard the fans are getting really bad.

I had to speak to my first fan in six years last night.

He was sitting on the bottom row of the bleachers.

Play right in front of him where b1 fouls a1 (partner has foul). And apparently A1 is his kid.

When I got to spot for throw in a2 is passing ball in and b1 is guarding the throw in.

Parent stands up comes to sideline and starts fussing, and yes I mean fussing, at the kid.

I HAD TO to tell the parent to back up.

I blew my whistle and sent the kids to their bench.

Got game management to escort the gentleman out of the gym.

I heard a great fan management story from a partner a couple of weeks ago. Several years ago, he did this varsity game, which was closely contested all the way through. He and his partner felt as though they'd done a great job keeping control, and that the right team (visitors) had won. As they were leaving the gym, there was an elderly couple limping their way out. As my friend, Gene, and his partner got near them, the woman looked up, and made eye contact, and was clearly about to speak. Gene went over to her and said, "Good evening". And she smiled and said, "That was the worst job of reffing I've ever seen. You gentlemen should never set foot in a gym again. How could you... " He ran away to his partner who was dying of laughter.

First of all, what in the world does that have to do with game management? Second, why would an official EVER say that the right team won? As an official, I find that extremely offensive. We're out there to call the fairest game we can, not to make sure the right team wins.

"The right team won" means that we called a fair game, and the team that played the best, won. I'm sorry to have offended you. Does the explanation help any?

Worst I have had was a fan that decided my partner and I were responsible for his kid's team for losing by 30 points and decided to hang around and let us know we were number 1 as we were leaving.
The guys mouth was running all game. When his kids team had fouled enough to get to the bonus he yelled that we "knew" that they were in the bonus. I felt like telling him I graduated from his teams school and that they don't teach how to count past 5. I bit my tounge tho.
