Digger Phelps/Jay Bilas ESPN Pre-Game Show

Did anyone else see the Digger Phelps/Jay Bilas "coach/official" interaction piece this morning (1/19/08) on the ESPN pre-game? Sad. Now they are giving people "advice" on how to work the officials during a game. Just sad . . .

Digger has always been smarter that anyone in the world. Has he ever coached since he got fired at ND. He is a jerk, I wish they would replace him on TV

Phelps was named the head coach of Notre Dame for the 1971-1972 season. In 20 seasons at Notre Dame, he recorded a 393-197 mark (.666), including 14 20-win seasons. He led Notre Dame to its only Final Four appearance ever in 1977-78. Every player who competed for four years under Phelps received his degree, a perfect 54-for-54 mark. Phelps resigned on April 15, 1991.

Yeah, a real jerk.

I was surprised by the stat that they showed on Digger

21 years -- only 11 technical fouls -- no ejections.

I'm fond of the time they ended the UCLA streak.

Digger actually admitted to purposely riding the partners of an official whom he thought made a bad call, never the offending official.

Jay was pretty good an the "official". Loved this exchange:
Digger: This is a nationally televised game!!! How can they let that guy work on national televsion?

Jay (as official): How could you wear that shirt on national television?
