I have a Pastor who coaches 5/6 grade in my rec league. He's in his second year in the 5/6 league.

A nice guy and the most ribbing I got from him was last week when we were one official short and I switched gyms and came into his game about 2:00 into the first quarter....He says to me "Hey, don't you know the game started at 10:00!"

If you have a pre-game with the coaches and captains, our assoc. recommends for all levels (7-12), then the pre-game can serve as a reminder/warning about behavior and what can happen. Some behavior, especially from just a few special coaches, will breed discontempt among the players and fans. I've seen some coaches acting like absolute true smart asses and they get just warnings from the refs; I don't know what prevents them from whacking them. These guys must have truly thick skin.

There are some really good guys out there too...I just have to agree with officials when they say that the church leagues/catholic leagues are the worst to officiate most of the time. I've been on all sides of basketball (player, coach, official) and I know emotions get involved big time...I've been REALLY frustrated with officials on the coaching side. However, even if they made the wrong call...all you can do is ask that they look harder at that call. I made mistakes coaching, I made mistakes as a player and I make mistakes as an official. As a sidebar...I know it's been posted here before, but...I think EVERY coach should be required to officiate some games...even at the lower levels...to get the feel for what it's like.
