75 free throws in a game.....by one team

I just love what the coach of the losing team has to say.

He wants them to foul on layups. Still an unbelievable tally, but I would guess that the officials aren't hanging around for handshakes at ANY of his games.

He shoulda said "I don't know how to coach good, legal defense. And tonight, it caught up with me."

Same old, same old. Blame the officials.

“the most bizarre game” - certainly sounds like it! One coach is happy, the other, not so much.....

On a good note, the referees were compared to olympic athletes - so, we got that going for us don'tcha know!

Hey partner, foul count is 74 to 17. I'm not saying make one up, but let's get one if it's there.

The interesting thing is one of the officials wasn't registered with the state.

All I can say is WOW. Does any one have any idea how long this game lasted? My guess is that it had to be around 3 hrs long. I can't imagine a game like this one.

Probably because he typically does college games. It's apparently not required there. In spite of what the loser coach says, it doesn't say anything in particular about the official; nor does the fact that they got off the court immediately without taking questions.

The losing coach explains the whole thing himself:

"... blah, blah... aggressive defense... blah, blah..." Apparently, he hasn't looked in the coaching thesaurus lately where the entries under "aggressive defense" include, "lots of fouls", "lots of free throws", "lots of junk".

I will say, though, that refs who do primarily college men's ball might very well be calling more fouls than refs who are more accustomed to not-very-skilled hs girls' game. But I"m also sure it would be equally more calls for both teams.

There could be a provision were he may not be required to register with the state. I just find it odd for a state not required officials to register to work high school sports.

Personally as an official, I would want the benefits being a state registered officials provides. (i.e. lnsurance)

...and you know, actually a free throw count of 74 doesn't mean a foul count of 74. That's only, maybe, 50 fouls or so. That's a lot, but we've all seen teams that play like that.

...and the winning coach most likely saw early on that the refs were calling it "tight" and told the players to back off a little. Coach adjusted to the refs, as a good coach should, and reaped the reward. Hope it happens that way again on Feb. 1.

I was thinking about the ref not "registering". In Minnesota we can put our schedules online and then after the game the coaches go online and rate our performances. I wonder if this ref doesn't do that. That is what I am thinking happened here. Otherwise to ref you have to attend a meeting, sign something saying you were there and then take the test they hand out at the end of the meeting.

Who knows.

I think it's highly likely that the assignor was desperate for someone (anyone!) to cover the game. The non-registered official was an old officiating friend from way back who happened to have an evening free and did a favor for a friend. Probably a one-time emergency work-around that benefited everyone.
