Screening Rules for ballhandler

It wasn't clear to me in the post a couple weeks ago, and I want to teach my kids the correct rule.

If A1 is dribbling in the open court and gets past his defender B1, at what point can he move over in front of his defender's path?

Does he need to give him time and space? One step? Two steps?

Thanks!

Time and distance have no relevance on a player with the ball. Whoever gets to the spot first is entitled to the spot.

Actually this refers to guarding a player with the ball. Screening principles apply to the ballhandler, and time and distance are relevant.

Screening principles also apply to a dribbler. If moving defender B1 has established a straight-line path, then dribbler A1 does have to give time/distance if he jumps into B1's path. The rules say one or two strides, so plan on teaching two to make sure.

NFHS rule 4-40-2&5 for your reading pleasure.
