While I believe that as well, I can't tell my wife that...if I told her I would do it for free, then it becomes a "hobby" rather than a second job, and a hobby that takes me away from home 4 nights/days a week doesn't fly when you have a 9mo old at home

.

I'm the opposite. Officiating is my avocation, not my vocation. I'd do it for free, although not as many games as I do now. I get paid to get a good cardio workout and have fun.

With the move to 3-person crews, you still get paid to have fun, but you don't get paid for a "good cardio workout." Being out on the court is better than being sedentary, but one of the things I dislike about the 3-person games is that we don't get to run as much anymore.

Still, on balance, 3-person crews are preferred.

That is the truth! I worked a 2-person game last Fri and a (terrible!) 3-person game last night and it was no contest, last night we hardly broke a sweat...granted the game was brutal, no up and down, no flow, but still....

Heck, it doesn't get any better with a 14 yr old at home either!
