Gerry Davis kicked a call big time in Yankee-Mariner Game tonight
8th inning 2 outs R1 on first steals second.....
I've seen the replay and the only thing I can think off is that he was blocked by Cano the second baseman and couldn't see the base. However there is one camera angle that was shown from his view point and from the angle shown I can't see how he missed it. To add insult to injury the next batter blooped one to right and the Mariners tie the game then Mariano gives up a dinger in the 9th. Yanks lose, I bet he is glad it was the last game of the series and not the first. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=270507110 -g |

Gerry was slow to get position & must have been straight lined. One of the hazards of a four umpire crew with U2 on the 1B side (And right on the grass/dirt edge) is having that happen if one is a step or two slow into the cutout.

We all kick calls every now and then. It is called being human. I am sure that was not the first call he missed and certainly will not be the last either.
Peace

YAAAAWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNN!
So what! Gerry Davis kicked a call and the Yankees (because they didn't bother to get a few insurance runs) lost the game! All is right with the world and Gerry will move to 1st base tonight. All Yankee fans do is whine - it's always someone else's fault! BWAHAHAHAHA!

You know, it wasn't even that he blew the call. I can live with that, we all miss one every now and then. I was more surprised by the severity of the miss. The runner was a good 3 feet from the bag. I'm not exaggerating to make a point, it was easily three feet.
Getting a banger wrong is understandable. Getting a play wrong when something weird or third worldish happens, that I get. But a MLB umpire getting a simple steal of second wrong when a runner is out by 3 FEET, I'm just flabbergasted. That just shouldn't happen. That is not a miss, that is a gross miss. And it happened because on that one play, Gerry was lazy. You guys talk about hustling on every play and working hard to be in the right spots, coming set and adjusting if necessary to see the play. This is why umpires have to work hard on each and every play to get the call right. If you don't, you can make a call like that. That play drives home that point with stunning clarity. For the record, I'm not complaining. The Yankees certainly weren't helped by the call, but they lost it all on their own. No whining here... It couldn't have happened to a better team, unless it was the Red Sox...

Well I am certainly wiser than this man. It is only too likely that neither of us has any knowledge to boast of; but he thinks that he knows something which he does not know, whereas I am quite conscious of my ignorance. At any rate it seems that I am wiser than he is to this small extent, that I do not think that I know what I do not know. ~Socrates |

Blame the officials which has become a battle cry whenever a team loses. Amateur baseball comment: There will be a beautiful day for baseball, A sports complex with many fields. Plenty of participants however, no games being played. Where are the officials? ESPN etc. have made our jobs as amateur umpires more difficult. The bottom line is: No matter how good an official one is you will not get EVERY call right. It's a fact of life. Also, let's not forget, we do not have SUPER SLO MO to aid us out there. Bottom Line: The Yanks still had a chance to get out of the inning. F1 did not get the job done and gave up a base hit. Also, one if not the greatest closers in the history of the sport gave up a dinger. Don't worry Yankee fans Roger is on his way after ge gets his 18 holes in Pete Booth
