Hanging on Rim

Where do you draw the line on deciding to give a techincal foul?

Under 10 full pull-ups = technical foul.

Everybody has a different interpretation. Any kind if pull up should be automatic unless there are defenders legitimately underneath. If it looks unnecessary, it should be called. The reason for the rule is to prevent taunting or intimidation, so if that appears to be the motive, you don't want to risk the potential of escalating tensions or emotions by the opponent.

If there's no reason for them to be hanging on the rim (no one underneath them), then whack them. Not a tough line to draw at all...

The rule was instituted to try and avoid damage to baskets. Taunting was never a factor.

You also never want to try and guess a player's "motive", unless you really are an oracle and can actually read minds.

It ain't brain surgery. Rockyroad pointed out the correct, and easy, way to make the call.

I use the thre-point line. If the player is inside the line, it's a T. If the player is outside the line, it's not.

Automatic?
I'm surprised nobody else touched on this
It must be Wednesday!

Oracle, based on your previous posts it's evident to me that you are not new to officiating. Since you are fairly new to this board (assuming you haven't had another alias) I think I should let you know the term "automatic" isn't to be used in our vocabulary 'round here.

That term is almost as bad as "over the back" or "reaching".

Speaking of over the back, has anyone ever seen a ref signal this alleged violation? Some of the funniest sh!t ever...

I've used the signal when playing monster with my kids.

It's 2.71828 points short of the three-point line.
