Looking for Association Ideas
I take the reins next year for 1 season and I was hoping to share or more specifically, get some association meeting ideas. Specifically - non-assigning related material.
Don't get me wrong, I have last year's template but I am interested in hearing some different ideas. What is working well / not well? What is your general meeting format? Anything you want to brain dump. If you don't want to air it here - [email protected] |

Whatever material you do go over, be sure it's also posted on the web, or mailed to folks who aren't there.
Always review anyhthing that has come to the attention of the baord or supervisor during the week. Kicked rules or misapplied rules. One rule review, one mechanics review every week. Maybe take questions from the floor? Cases that came up? One suggestion for how to handle certain coach type comments or situations. Put some scorebook information into their heads? Oh, and refer them to us! We'll help you keep them in line! |

Does this association assign games or do you just train official?
How many members do you have? Do you have regular meetings before, during or after the season? Peace

We do not assign, our role is pre-season training.
One of the oldest associations in Ohio - started in 1926 - we have members ranging from 53 years to 1 year and everything in between. We have somewhere between 250 and 275 members. We meet before the season starts with one exception and thats the makeup meeting. We are required to go to 4 meetings total and our association puts on 7. |

I belong to a couple of associations that are "multi-sports" associations. In one of those associations we have run what we call "New Official's Classes." We felt there was a need to discuss some issues that newer officials often do not get addressed in the general meeting. I ran the classes and came up with topics from everything like "How to get games" to "What to do before a game." I would cover these things from a new official's perspective and tried to make it very interactive so they would feel comfortable to participate and to get their questions answered that veterans would often role their eyes at.
Our general meetings are mostly rules presentations which if I had the power, we should get away from that because they tend to be self-explanatory and the presenters tend to read the information rather than present the information. Our association also instituted a mentor program where we match up younger officials with veteran officials above the level of the younger official so they can be evaluated and just help out the young official anyway the mentor sees fit. Peace

One thing that I have found useful this year that a couple of associations have done is to have a couple coaches come to a meeting. Give them a topic to discuss, like the one I was at the topic was coaches expectations of officials. Then open up to questions from the officials to the coaches.
This seemed to work pretty well and was fairly enlightening. Gave a nice insight to what the coaches in our area are looking for out of officials. Did this prior to season starting. |

We have a meeting before our business meeting that we call the "Better Officiating" meeting. It is primarily for first and second year officials where we go over things that they may have seen in their games and were unsure about, rules interps, we show them videos on traveling, rough post play, etc...
these are really good sessions and over the last year or 2 we are starting to get a lot of participation from the vets as well.... Our regular meeting are the typical business stuff but we also have an interpreters session where our board interpreter goes over things. That part is really good.

One of my favorite meetings from our association that we've done the past couple of years involves reviewing video of actual game situations and discussing it. Very helpful.
