Coaches sub-varsity
I more question, for now anyways...
I think the NFHS just refers to head coaches, regardless of level, but can head JV, soph, frosh, head coaches stand while coaching their team...within the confines of the coaches box, of course. |

Depends on the state. But oveall, yes, same rules for all levels Varsity, JV, Freshman etc.
Some states say they can stand, and have 1 foot outside the box, others say, both feet in the box. I believe Pa. doesn't allow coaches to stand suring the game. I like that. |

Seat belt in all levels except varsity. 14 foot box in varsity (boys and girls). |

I was inches from tripping over both JV coaches tonight on a fast break, and after the next stoppage, we had a little discussion about how they really needed to stay behind the orange line. |

1. The NFHS rules book is written for VARSITY contests. Says so right in the front. So it is up to each state to decide what rules to apply to their sub-varsity games. NV treats all HS games the same rulewise.
2. PA used to make their coaches sit, but a couple of years ago adopted the coaching box. |

I've seen subvarsity officials completely ignore this while waiting for my game, BTW. |

WIAA sez, "in physical contact." Younger officials either are too concerned with play on the court or too scared to take action. It's problematic because the sub-v coaches are the ones needing the rule the most. Last edited by MadCityRef; Sat Dec 01, 2007 at 05:40pm. |

For everyone else, here's the text. Number 1 is pretty clear to me. It's essentially a rewrite of the NFHS seat belt rule (no optional coaching box): 1. Coaching Box For varsity games only the head coach may be off the bench in front of his/her seat within the confines of the designated fourteen-foot coaches boxto give instructions to his/her players and/or substitutes. 2. Bench Conduct For all nonvarsity competitionthe following coaches bench conduct rule must be followed: A direct technical foul will be assessed a coach for failure to maintain body contactwith the bench at anytime while the clock is running or is stopped except to: A. Rise and stand in front of his/her seat to request a time-out or signal his/her players to request a time-out. B. Confer with personnel at the scorers’ table to request a 60-second time-out for a correctable error. C. Confer with personnel at the scorers’ table to request a 60-second time-out to prevent or rectify a timing or scoring mistake or an alternating possession mistake. D. Replace or remove a disqualified or injured player, or player directed to leave the game, within 20seconds when a substitute is available from within the confines of his/her bench. E. Confer with bench personnel and players within the confines of the bench area during a charged time-out or the intermission between quarters and extra periods. F. Attend an injured player when beckoned onto the court by an official. |
