Backboard Situation

Need help on this one (Men NCAA Rules)

Situation: A1 shoots the ball and it hits the rim. At the same time A2 slaps the backboard causing the goal to shake. The ball bounces off the rim (at least 3 inches away from the basket) and while A2's hand is on the backboard he uses his other hand to catch the lay the ball in the basket.

Yes the guy has major hops....do we have a call here? Should the basket count?

Here are the concerns:
1. A2 slaps the backboard
2. A2 has hand on backboard while shooting

I believe the only call you can make is a T on A2 for purposefully slapping the backboard. Whether the rim shakes is completely irrelevant, the call is based solely on whether the perpetrator is trying to block a shot or not; clearly not an option for A2 here.

Also, if A2 uses the backboard to increase his "hang time," it's a T.

I agree. And, it's unlikely for a player from Team A to slap the backboard during a try to cause it to shake.

If A2 gained an advantage by having the hand on the backboard, call the T; otherwise you have nothing.

So...negate the basket and call the T, correct?

If you felt that the hand on the backboard helped him get the shot off, then yes, you would assess the technical foul; the ball becomes dead immediately, so the basket cannot be counted.

I would be really hesitant to call A2 for slapping his own backboard and causing his own teammate's shot to rattle off the rim. The missed shot should be penalty enough (if you feel a penalty should be assessed). Now if A2 hit B's backboard...

????

I believe that the technical foul for gaining an advantage by putting a hand on the backboard is often referred to as the "Ralph Sampson (Virginia) Rule"
