Tough start for new coach

Just saw a news story last week on a JV coach getting promoted here in VT to the varsity job. Nice guy. Good coach. Team is returning most starters and should challenge for the D-I title this year. Saw a news story today that the star player is in hot water for a drug arrest with other paraphenalia such as multiple precision scales, etc., in addition to the drugs. A real roller coaster ride for the new coach. And maybe a huge wakeup call for this kid, who may have really set the tone for his adult life, but hopefully not.

Coaches know this going in. Believe me, getting that lead job was everything, not the players. Players come and go, what you want is that head job so you can foster your career. One of the greatest things about coaching, besides the fact that you can make way more money than officating is that you can have such a profound effect on a young man's (or woman's) life. Something that sticks with you beyond your days of coaching. One of the greatest compliments is to have a student come up to you (some you don't even remember, but they remember you) and prasie you for the hard work and discipline you instill in their life.
