Gentlemen and ladies:

I am not an official. I am a radio play-by-play announcer. I work a lot of high school games, and believe me, some the locations that I have to broadcast from in high school gyms are pretty bad. I can't always get a good look at the official as he/she is indicating to the official scorekeeper who the foul is on. Thus, sometimes, my tally of the fouls does not match-up with that of the official scorekeeper.

My question is this: What ever happened to the rule that the player who committed the foul had to raise his hand? That was the rule when I first started watching basketball when I was a kid, but it seems to have gone by the wayside. I wish they would bring it back.

LDB,welcome to the forum. The rule that you are talking about was taken out of the book using the logic that,if the official reported the foul properly to the scorer, there was no actual need for the "fouler" to raise their hand.Good thing, too. They kept tinkering with the rule after it was first put in 'til it became ridiculous.Player committing a foul had 5 seconds to raise his arm,and he had to raise it straight up(couldn't raise it 1/2 way, wave it,etc.).We were actually supposed to call a T on a player if he didn't raise his arm properly or on time.I can certainly see why you you'd like to see it returned, but I don't think you'll get too many officials to agree with you.:

LDB, WELCOME ABOARD

It is great to have you join the Discussion forum. As you are probably already aware, it is here that you will "Hear" the hallowed Striped ones' opinions and interpretations of rules and game situations.

There are a few pet peeves that you will see re-occur... Look in the NFHS rulebook (Impress us, tell us you DO have a rulebook! ) for the "Over-the-back" foul and the "reaching" foul, they DO NOT EXIST. What should you call them?

Another common misconception is the Frontcourt/Backcourt violation. You will see this often.

Since you have joined us, we will expect that you will learn and help us inform the spectators to become more knowledgeable fans! OK, so I am a positive thinker!

Stay active here and you will have some "colorful" stories to tell.

Season's greetings and best wishes to all!

Hey, Tony & Larks, your day will come.
Three old officials sitting on a porch at the Old Referee retirement home.

Mr. Lead - "Man, I'm tired."

Mr. Center - Why are you tired?"

Mr. Lead - "I woke up this morning at 6am and had to take a dump."

Mr. Center - "Well, I got up at 5 and had to take a dump."

Mr. Trail - "That's nothing! I had to take a dump at 7."

Mr. Lead - "What's so bad about that?"

Mr. Trail - "I don't get up until 8!"

If I'm offended by these comments, or they make me "feel uncomfortable", can I sue for "age harassment"?????
