Biggest myths

What are the most often perpetuated myths about the rules of basketball that you encounter in your dealings with fans, players and coaches?

I'd have to say my top two are

1) Backcourt - most I talk to think the ball is in the frontcourt the moment the ball or part of a foot touches the frontcourt.

2) Traveling - most I interact with also don't understand the concept of having control over the ball to have a travel.

What about you? Any really wacky or out there myths you've come across?

That rule 11 prohibits the player in back from getting the rebound

That rule 12 prohibits a player from reaching for a ball.

Control. People think that a player is walking when they are trying to gain control of the ball. It's ugly, but not a walk.

There are some very nice lists of most understood basketball rules and no doubt one of them will get posted. I have one printed out and intend to make some video clips over the summer to go along with them as an instructional aid [to parents!] for a 6th grade league.

For instace, take five offensive players, plant the pick guy in the key and make a 20-30 second clip where the big guy never moves yet there is no 3-second violation because of a combination of bringing the ball up the court and shots. There are probably about a dozen nice videos that could be make to illustrate some of the misunderstood rules.

Search the forum for "misunderstood rules".

Wow. That's ambitious. I'd love to hear how that turns out. Rather than educating the parents, see if ya can hog-tie the coaches and force THEM to watch it.

Posting it and getting feedback is a given. Thanks.
I also plan to have applications for parents who wish to begin a career in officiating!

Check Your Rule Book

From JeffW:A player returning inbounds has to have both feet in bounds before touching the ball or can't be the first one to touch.

JeffW: Check your basketball rule book. That's why this play is on the list of The Most Misunderstood Basketball Rules. Please check out rule 4-35-1.

From JeffW: It's not a violation to intentionally go out of bounds to avoid all the congestion in the lane because I've been playing basketball all my life and I've always done that!

JeffW: Sorry to inform you, just because you've been playing basketball all your life and doing this doesn't mean it's not a rule. Please check out Rule 9-3-2.

Billy, I think Jeff was trying to make a contribution to the list. I don't think he was saying that he actually thought those things were true.

Should I Add ....

12) If a player's momentum carries him or her off the court, he or she can be the first player to touch the ball after returning inbounds. That player must not have left the court voluntarily and must immediately return inbounds. That player must have something in and nothing out. It is not necessary to have both feet back inbounds.

Should I add a "myth" regarding a violation to intentionally go out of bounds.

Revised Most Misunderstood Basketball Rules

12) If a player's momentum carries him or her off the court, he or she can be the first player to touch the ball after returning inbounds. That player must not have left the court voluntarily and must immediately return inbounds. That player must have something in and nothing out. It is not necessary to have both feet back inbounds. It is a violation for a player to intentionally leave the court for an unauthorized reason.

Thanks to the following Official Forum Basketball web site members for their contributions in developing this list: bossref, Hartsy, Jurassic Referee, Camron Rust, Mark Padgett, Nevadaref, Mark Dexter, Dan ref, mdray, Jimgolf, elecref, Assignmentmaker, IREFU2, David M, and JeffW.
